FAQ
Everything you need to know today
Straight answers to the questions we get asked the most.
What do you inspect?
We inspect the pressure systems that are part of your autoclave or compressor in accordance with the Pressure Systems Safety Regulations 2000.
How often does equipment need inspecting?
That depends on what your Written Scheme says, but usually it's once per year for autoclaves and once every two years for a compressor.
What is a Written Scheme?
A Written Scheme of Examination is the document required under the Pressure Systems Safety Regulations 2000 that sets out how and when your pressure vessels should be examined. Inspections are carried out in accordance with that scheme.
What is a PVI?
A PVI is a pressure vessel inspection that is carried out in accordance with a Written Scheme and with the Pressure Systems Safety Regulations 2000.
What is an insurance inspection?
An insurance inspection is a pressure vessel inspection carried out by an employee of an insurance company. Pressure vessel (or Engineering) insurance is not required; some owners choose it or it may be bundled with other insurance.
What is a working exam as carried out by an insurance company?
A working exam is a check of a compressor carried out by an insurance company’s engineer in the years when a full pressure vessel inspection is not due. Compressors generally only need a pressure vessel inspection once every two years, while insurance policies usually run for 12 months. At those renewals, the insurer checks that the compressor is still there, is still the same machine, and appears to be in good working order.
What is testing or validation for an autoclave?
Testing is a process that confirms that required parameters such as temperature, pressure, exposure time, and steam penetration are accurately met. For dental practices, this is set out in HTM 01-05.
How can Independent Inspections help me with compliance?
We help practices stay on top of steriliser and compressor compliance with: • Written Schemes of Examination and inspections of pressure vessels under PSSR 2000. • Servicing and breakdown support. • Testing (or validation) aligned with HTM 01-05 for Dental Practices.
What does a service contract include?
A service contract normally includes two scheduled services, one at the start of the contract and one after six months. It includes breakdown cover for faults that are covered by the contract. Consumables such as door seals, lid gaskets, cassette seals and filters are charged separately. The contract doesn't cover furniture and fittings (such as trays, racks, cassettes and bottles), external casing damage, steam generators, extras such as printers or gauges, parts that are no longer available, or damage caused by oils, incorrect fluids, scale, misuse or running dry. It also excludes call-outs for door, lid or cassette leaks, foreign objects in the chamber, or instances where no fault is found.
Will you complete a repair in a single visit?
Most of the time, yes. Our engineers carry most parts but on occasion there may be a part they don’t have. A return visit may also be needed if the cost needs approval first or if the fault is intermittent and difficult to find.
How do appointments work?
You schedule an appointment directly with the engineer who will be visiting you with no call centre in the middle. The first appointment of the day is the only one where a set time can be guaranteed as later visits can get delayed by traffic or other circumstances, although the engineer will always give you an approximate time. He will always keep you informed if he can't get to you at the expected time.
What area do you cover?
London and much of the South East.
How do you determine the travelling fee?
This is set according to the distance the engineer has to travel from his base.
Why do you charge in advance?
We invoice before the visit so we can keep overheads down. Less admin and less time spent on chasing unpaid invoices means we can keep our prices lower. It also locks in the engineer’s diary, cuts no-shows, and means everything is agreed and paid for before the job starts.
